FRUIT IN SCHOOLS.

MOVE BY COMMITTEES.

DOMINION CONFERENCE. Support for a "fruit in schools" scheme contained in a remit put forNvard from Manaivatu and Orua was expressed to-day at the sixth annual national conference of the Dominion Federation of School Committees' Associations of Xew Zealand. Mr. W. H. Fortune presided.

The remit pointed out that in view of the fact that large quantities of fruit are wasted every season and that fruitgrowers are 111 need of ready markets for their produce, the Government should be asked to inaugurate a scheme for the issue of suitable fruit to schools which are not in the "milk in schools" scheme, particularly in rural areas.

It was also agreed that an election of school committees -hould be held annually, and that only some members of committees should retire in one year, the remaining members retiring in the following year. It was also stressed that all member* were eligible for reelection. all the recommendations being applicable also to intermediate schools.

Another remit approved was that in cases where schools are consolidated, facilities should be provided to enable hot lunches to be given to pupils who come from a distance to attend the school.

' his afternoon delegates to the conference visited the Auckland Teachers' training College, and this evening they will be the guests of the Auckland School Committees' Association at its annual social evening to be held at the Orange Coronation Hall. Newton Road.
