South Africa Not To Change
Relations.
SMUTS WANTS NAZI BREAK,
Iu the South African Hoiir*c of Asc-iinbly, states a broadcast message. General Hertzog read a declaration of policy. It was that South Africa's relations with the belligerent countries should persist unchanged. obligation* between the Union and Britain should continue unimpaired. Amongst these obligations were those relating to the naval station at Simonstown. General Hertzog added that a difference had arisen in the Cabinet on the question of this policy.
General Smuts moved an amendment that: (1) The Union should refuse to adopt neutrality; and (2) that the Union should take measures for the defence of its territory and interests, but should not necessarily send forces overseas. General Smuts said he was convinced that the freedom and independence of the Union were at stake in the present conflict, and that mem be 113 of the Union should sever complete relations with Germany.
