HEAVY DEFEAT.
REBUFF TO LANG. N.S.W. Labour Unity Conference Decision. MAT LOSE LEADERSHIP. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 3 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. A conference between the Lang and Heffron factions of the New South Wales Labour movement sat during the week-end under the direction of officers of the Federal Australian Labour party in an endeavour to obtain unity in the party. The conference, by 204 votes to 106, rejected a proposal by the Lang party that the conference should continue to elect a leader of the Parliamentary Labour caucus, and the caucus was instructed to meet within a fort night to elect a leader.
The effect of this decision was to end the dictatorial powers conferred on Mr. J. T. Lang at the 1927 Labour conference. Labour officials believe that Mr. Lang will be defeated at the ballot for leader, also that Mr. R. Heffron will not have sufficient support to gain the position.
The "Sydney Morning Herald" says the Labour unity conference resulted in a sweeping victory for the Heffron party, which has now become the official Labour party in New South Wales.
