HEART OF CONVENTRY MADE A SMILES.
FIVE DEAD. Terrific Blast Causes Much Damage.
ANOTHER I.R.A. OUTRAGE? United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 3 p.m.) LONDON", August 25. A terrific explosion reduced the centre of Coventry to a shambles. Five arc dead and 12 have been detained in hospital, while 50 were slightly injured in the explosion. The police believe that a member of the I.R.A. placed a time bomb on a tradesman's tricycle, which was left standing in the street. The police questioned three persons, who subsequently were allowed to go. They had excited suspicion by running towards a motor car, under the impression that war had started. No arrests were made. Thousands of pounds' worth of damago was done to shop fronts and windows in the chief thoroughfare of Broadjiate, which was ankle-deep in shattered j;lass, while buses and trams were also damaged. The discovery of a new I.R.A. plot to attack Government buildings in London led the police specially to guard the Admiralty, the War Office, and the Ministry of Transport.
