INTERESTING INCIDENTS. Two interesting incidents are related in connection with the two big dividends at Riccarton on Saturday. Mr. D. O. Rutherford, owner of Wagner, was approached before the Heathcote Handicap, was run and asked if he was anxioiH to staj-t his horse, as one withdrawal was necessary to obviate the necessity of two division*. Mr. Rutherford's re*>V *as to the effect that his horse had as good a chance as any other, ar.d there was no reason to sort him out as the one that should not be in the field. Wagner was duly produced, and his owner supported him on both machines. In the second division of the Longbeach Handicap, Blue Coat was bracketed with Merry March because of the number of starters being in excess of the 24 spaces on the totalisator face. Mr. D. Grant, owner of Blue Coat, invariably has some investment on any horse he races, and he placed his usual amount on Blue Coat. He had some satisfaction in seeing Blue Coat in front for the major portion of the journey, and walked away quite pleased with the colt's display. It was not till some few minutes later that he was aware that Blue Coat was bracketed with Merry March, and he collected a handsome sum from the totalisator. PROMISING THREE-YEAR-OLD. Gold Salute, who won at Riccarton on Saturday, and looks like developing into a food three-year-old, is out of the Paper ioney mare Frenzied Finance, whose stud career has been a series of misfortunes. Her first foal was Miladi, by Weathervane, and then four successive foals died. -The next two were Warden's Gift, a filly, and Gold Salute, both by Lord Warden, and the next foal,, by Nightmarch, also-died. Frenzied Finance was a very speedy mare when racing, and she has bequeathed a good measure of her pace /to Gold Salute, who njso looks ns if he will run on. (t is understood that he will bi taken to Australia for the spring, meetings. On looks he will not be out of place .in any classic field. TOTALISATOR FRACTIONS. In connection with the Auckland Racing Club's annual meeting, the president, Mr. O. Nicholson, said that tne totalisator fractions under the win and place system -were less than - under - the- single pool sy*tem, not vice versa.
