In the men's doubles final Gene Mako and Mulloy beat Kiggs and E. T. Cooke I winners of the British doubles at Wimbledon), 6—B, o—3, 6—l. Alter the tournament Riggs stated: "I have found my touch, and feel really confident of beating the Australians." Caustic Critics. In an article on "Dv Hopman and Hie Bromide Treatment," the "Xew York Sun's" tennis critic remarks that the Australians' diet has been regulated to soft opposition and they now seem to be in a coma. Their play lacks sustained vigour. In strong contrast, Walter Pote. the United States' captain, has been lashing the Americans into a frenzy and has given them plenty of ved meat and bone in all I kinds of rough and tumble tournaments; I whereas Harry Hopman has moved the Australians forward with even larger doses of bromide than he did in 1938. '"It is evident that Adrian Quist and John Bromwich are in a state approaching tennis nomnolenee. Xo matter how actively the Yugoslavs play at Boston from August 24 to 2(3. it will be a miracle if tlie Europeans awaken them, added the "Sun's" critic. The "Xew York World-Telegram" comments that it is questionable now whether Bromwich and Quist are first-class players and quotes L'nited States lawn tennis officials as saying: "Riggs and Parker are not impressive, but the Australians are mediocre. The challenge round will be a battle of sec'iul-rate players, which will give us a chance. - ' When United States beat Australia in the challenge round at Philadelphia on September 3, 4 and 5 last year, J. D. Budge beat both Quist and Bromwich, while Rigge won his singles against Quist, 4—6. 6—o, B—6, 6—l. Bromwich beat Riggs, 6-4. 4—6, 6—o, 6—2, in the American's second singles, and assisted Quist to conquer Budge and Mako in the doubles.
