ATHLETES AND STUDENTS

The two nominees for the 103!) Rhodes Scholarship from the Auckland University College were selected this morning bv the Professorial Roaid. Thcv are Paul Woodford Day. acred 22 years, and Murray William Speight, 20 years. Mr. Day was educated at the Pukekolie Primary and Technical High Schools, becoming dux of both departments. He represented his school at both football and athletics. In gaining a University Scholarship, lie was first in the Dominion in geography and second in English and French. In his terms exanflnation at the university in 103(5, 1037 and 1038 he secured a majority of tirst-class passe*, sharing the French scholarship in 1938.

A member of the executive of the Students' Association at the college for two years, he has taken a prominent part in administrative affairs of the student life, being also Auckland delegate to the Easter inter-university tournaments this year and last year. Ho was also a member of the college Joynt Scroll debating team. He has represented the college in athletics, and has taken a keen interest in football.

Mr. Speight's Career. Receiving his primary education at the Newmarket School. Mr. Speight later entered the Auckland firammar School, where he was the winner of three memorial prizes in the Upper Sixth, and was first in all New Zealand in the Junior University Scholarship examination. At the college he has had eight first-class passes for his B.A. degree, while in 1038 he was senior scholar in Greek.

He has also taken a prominent part in sport. He represented the college in hockey and tennis, while he has his New Zealand University blue in hockey. A member of the executive of the Students' Association this year, he is also secretary of that body. He is at present sports editor of "Craecum," the college magazine.

Later in the year both nominees will pro to Wellington, where, together with the nominees from the other colleges, they will go before a committee, of which the Governor-General, Lord Galway, is chairman.
