POPULAR FOREMAN.
RAILWAYS WORKSHOPS. MR. E. 11. DICKENSON RETIRES. Whnt was considered by some of the older men to be the heartiest ree-.'ption of its kind that tliey had ever attended was given last i isrht to Mr. E. H. Dickenson on hi* retirement from the position of machine-shop foreman at tho Otahnliu Railways Works-hops. Proof of Mr. Dickenson's popularity was the larje attendance at the smoke concert in hi* honour, the railways social hall at Newmarket being filled to its capacity. Presentations were made to Mr. Dickenson by the workshops manager, Mr. J. B. Graham, who was chairman during the evening, and by representatives of various railway departments. Mr. Graham expressed pleasure at seeing .-o largo a gathering, and regret at M r . Dickenson leaving the service. "Wn will all be sorry to lose him," said Mr. Graham, "and we hope he will have a long life enjoying the fruits of hi« work." When Mr. Dickenson came forward he was greeted with deafening applause. Tho senior foreman said that he had never seen any man go out of the service iso well liked by everybody, and other speakers, reiterating these remarks, said briefly that the splendid gathering expressed more than words could do the popularity of the retiring foreman. In reply, Mr. Dickenson, expressing hia thanks for the magnificent farewell and for the presents, which he deeplyappreciated, said that the men at Otahuhu were the finest he had ever worked with. , The gifts from the men were made at the workshops, and the care put into them was worthy of the esteem with which Mr. Dickenson was held. Several items were rendered during the evening, which was a great success, those responsible for tho social being fully rewarded for their efforts.
