LOCAL BODIES.

ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Onehunga Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. A. Garside, presiding. W 7 ade's Lane.—The borough solicitors are to advise the council as to the formalities required to take over Wade's Lane from Grey Street East. Scheme 13.—Recently the audit office inquired from the Labour Department as to whether certain borough works were authorised by the Department, and was informed that the scheme was practically an "all in" one. For this reason the audit inspector did not pursue nis inquiries as to the placement of Scheme 13 men any further. A total of 284 men, including 40 Maoris, are at present engaged under Scheme No. 13 special. Night Parking.—The traffic inspector reported that the parking of motor vehicles on grass margins at night without lights had been frequent of late. It was decided that if the practice is continued it will entail prosecution after August 7 next. Hospital Levy.—This amounts to £4035, as advised by the Hospital Board. Thi3 shows an increase of £14 over last year. Committee Appointments.—Owing to the absence of Mr. S. Brown in England, Mr. L. C. McClintock was appointed to fill his place on the works committee until his return. The Mayor and Messrs. J. E. D. McGuire, L. F. Catt and L. C. McClintock accepted office on the Physical Welfare Committee. Finance. —The district fund account was reported to be in debt £11,775. Rate arrears amounting to £3250 were reported to have been received up to July I 21 last.

Great South Road Beautifying Council.— j A subscription of £2 2/ waa_ granted to the Great South Road Beautifying Council. Mr. F. Grey was reappointed the council's representative. Heavy Traffic Fees.—A report from the Transport Department states that Otahuhu will deceive £900 in heavy traffic fees, against £1200 last year. Training Ground. —In order to provide a practice ground for the League Football Club it was resolved to prepare a portion of tlie pound reserve for the purpose, the work to be done with No. 13 scheme ■ labour. i Complaint.—The manner in which some I side streets in the borough are being used for parking second-hand cars for sale was I complained of by members of the council, i "Our loads are being used as showrooms,". ! said a councillor. The matter was left in ! the hands of the Mayor. I Fire-fighting. — Dealing with a report ' from the borough engineer in regard to a | recent big fire in the borough, the Mayor : said the report proved that the local fire j brigade did all that was possible and that I the borough had sufficient water and pres- ! sure to cope with any fire. The brigade's 1 work was often impeded by sightseers with ! motor ears. The report suggested that a body be formed to be called the Otahuhu Volunteer Fire Police to control vehicular and foot traffic. St. John Ambulance.—ln granting permission to the St. John Ambulance- AssoI ciation to hold a street collection the j council expressed the opinion that the | local branch should receive 25 per cent of ■ the amount collected.
