Silver Ring, winner of the ]!).'U Kpsom-Handicap, is to be retired and used as a hack. After Silver King finished a bad last in the Canterbury Handicap last Saturday the stewards asked a veterinary surgeon to examine the horse. He expressed tbe opinion that Silver Ring should not be allowed to race and the stewards decided to refuse bis nomination. Silver Ring was bred and owned in New Zealand, and among bis victories were tbe Awapuni Gold Cup (twice), C.J.C. Challenge Stakes (twice), C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, Thompson Handicap (Treutham), North Island Challenge Stakes, Kosebill Hill Stakes, A.J.C. Spring Stakes, A.J.C. Cumberland Plate and A.J.C. Plate.
.Silver King was first raced by Mr. D. Eraser, licensee of the Riccarton Hotel, who was murdered but the perpetrator of the crime was never discovered. Subsequently the horse was raced in partnership by Mrs. E. Fraser, widow of the late Mr. D. Fraser, and Mr. A. H. Walton (a relative).
