AT ENGLISH SCHOOL.
RECALLED BY OLD FRIENDS. INTEREST IN LONDON POOR. (Special.—Br Air Mail.) LOXDOX, June 3. Mrs. Roosevelt, wife of the President <>f the United States of America, received part of her education at an English school. This week two of her old school friends spoke of the girl who was to become America's foremost ladv.
Miss Helen Clifford, now principal of the Marie Souvestre School. Cobham, Surrey, pointe<l to a desk. On the flap in faded ink was "Anna Roosevelt, 1002." "Her maiden name was Roosevelt." said Miss Clifford. '"She was cousin to Franklin Roosevelt, whom she later married. 'Tottie.' as we called her, was only IS, but she often talked about her cousin Franklin. And three years later she married him." Miss Roosevelt was at the school, then at Wimbledon, for three years.
"She was the perfect pupil, respected by teachers, pupils and servants. She was just charming," another of her school friends, Miss Olive Hepburn, now vice-president of the school, said.
She was passionately interested in the welfare of the working classes, and on several occasions made journeys to the East End of London to see how the poor lived. That was sensational in those davs.
