OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

J.'he fortnightly meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council took place last evening, the Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., presiding. ; A Complaint.—"Pure humbug," was the comment of the Mayor when the town clerk read a letter from a ratepayer objecting to the proposed erection of a new municipal block, the estimated cost of which is £20.000. We need co-operation from the ratepayers, said the Mayor, but the writer of the letter has been opposed to the council's schemes for progress for the borough. On the motion of the Mayor, the letter was. received. Diaiuage Scheme.-- A letter was received from the Auckland Suburban Drainage I Board dealing with the metropolitan drainage scheme, which was presented to Parliament, and which, stated the Mayor, I was withdrawn by the sponsors. The j council adopted its previous attitude and I decided to take no action in the meantime. Police Station.—ln reply to a request from ihe council that the Otahuhu" Police Station be raised in status, the Department advised that the matter would receive favourable consideration. Anglican Cemetery.—A request was received from the Rev. R. J. Slautoa for tlie services of the borough staff to perform the grave digging in the Anglican cemetery. The opinion of councillors was that the required labour could not be spared, and the matter was referred to the p.irks committee. Council Representation.—Advice was received from the Auckland Institute and Museum Council to the effect that Mr. A. Murdoch had been elected as the borough representative. Sewerage Question.—With a view of a possible purchase of a block of land on the Great South Road for the purpose of erecting dwellings thereon, the Housing Department soujiht the council's intention regnrdina the question of sewerage. The council decided that it was not prepared to do the work required at present. Emergency Precautions. —It was decided to comply witli the wish of the Mayor of Auckland to assist in all ways possible in regard to air raid and other emergency precautions. Borough Balances. —The treasurer reported the position of the borough balances as follows:—District fund account, debit £3.328 18/1; temporary loan account, debit £12.346 10/: cemetery account, credit. £323 6,8; park account, credit. £132 12/1; domain account, credit, £83 5/2: drainage repayment account, credit. £450 18/8. Fire Equipment.—The fire brigade committee recommended that equipment for the local fire brigade amounting to a sum of £114 15/ be authorised by the council. This was referred to the finance committee. Centennial Celebrations. The council adopted recommendations from the centennial committee as follows: —(a> That various firms be approached to finance the cost of a float to be used for the purpose of depicting the industries carried on in the district: (b) that a ladies" rest room be erected by public subscription; (c) that an endeavour be made to arrange a combined eports function next January. Building Progress.—Building permits for the past fortnight amounted to £3§32.
