Serious dislocation of the metal trades and engineering industries occurred as the result of a strike of engine-drivers and firemen in ten big engineering workshops last week.
A mass meeting of iron-workers representing l.~>oo men in the shops concerned decided on Saturday to strike in sympathy with the drivers and firemen, resulting in a total of 4000 being idle.
The dispute hinged on the drivers' and firemen's claims for better wages and conditions, and a feeling that the employers were obstructing the men's objective, the obtaining of a new award embodying better pay. The strikers comprise the key men who drive cranes and operate steam and generating plants for electricity.
