EVERY MAN'S DUTY.
Captain Liddell Hart, famous English military writer, recently stated: '"Modern war has. too wide an effect for its practice to he treated as a "mystery.' Statesmen may direct it. generals, admiral* and air marshals may manage its operations —but every citizen, man or woman, is perforce a shareholder. The more tli«sy know about the way it is conducted the better for their security." That last sentence is supremely important. It make* ignorance of modern war as dangerous to human welfare ae. unchecked plague or famine. To-day it is a* necessary for a man to learn the technique of soldiering a* it is to guard his family against disease and malnutrition. Many young New Zealandens have not yet answered the appeal for volunteers. If it is mere dilatorinees we say to them, '"Snap out of it end step wp alongside those who are getting on with the job." To those who have genuine doubts, and we respect them for those doiibts. we say, "Tell ue what is holding you back and we shall do our honest l>est to give an answer that satisfies, you." We are ourselves serving in various units and offer to give advice concerning conditions of service to anyone who writes to the secretary. P.O. Box 47W.. Auckland.
