GOOD EXPORT SEASON.

CANTERBURY ORCHARDISTS

SECOND HIGHEST TOTAL,

While the Dominion export of pip fruits to the United Kingdom is expected in be a long way below last year's consignniente, Canterbury growers have experienced an exceptionally good year. Figures supplied by the' Department of Agriculture show that 39,813 cases of apples and 2705 casee of i«ars were exported by fifty Canterbury growers. This muke.s a total of 42,008, compared with last year's total of 3.1,471.

The quantity exported compares with the record crop of oti.OOO cases i n 1933 and i« regarded ae the second highest total yet recorded.

The fruit is marketed by the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board. and growers are guaranteed 11/ a case. e.i.f.. for both apples and peare. On this basis the crop i* estimated to bring to growers over £2»,(IOO. from which has to be deducted 4/S t> case to cover all the cost* of marketiii-j. A<s good prices have been ruliiijr on the London market, it i.s not anticipated that growers will require much assistance from the subsidy. .Sturmerg formed the largest shipment of th» twenty-one varieties of apple* exported.
