INCREASE IN CITY.

TOTAL EXCEEDS 10,000

IMPROVEMENT LAST WEEK. Motor registrations in Auckland showed a marked improvement during the latter part of last week, and the total at the city headquarters, in the Wellesley Street post office, exceeded 10,000 at the close of the week, being several hundreds ahead of the tigure on the corresponding day in May the previous year. Earlier in the month the registrations were below those of a year ago. "We expect the number of applications to increase daily," said an official this morning, when the indications were for a busy day. As the total number of motor vehicles of all classes registered in May, 103S, exceeded 21,3."i0,

and there had been a considerable increase m the number of ears on the roads, it was estimated that at least I-MH'O applications would have to be dealt with in Auckland city during the last nine days of the relieensing period. Staffs at the relieensing depot and also at the Auckland City Council's traffic department, where drivers' licenses are issued, have been augmented to cope with the rush of business anticipated between now and the end of the month. As. in former rears special arrangements will be made for the busiest period during the last few days. Both departments will co-operate at a central depot in the Town Hull concert chamber.
