THE CENTENNIAL

MANY PROPOSALS. PROVINCIAL MEMORIALS. WORK WEXX ADVANCED. "The Auckland Province is well advanced in its arrangements, and I am confident that it will commemorate the attainment of its hundredth birthday in the manner in which it is striving, and appropriate to an historical occasion," said the Mayor of Auckland, Six Ernest Davis, to-day. Sir Ernest said that the centennial committees had a dual re«|>onsibility, as they were answerable for memorials as well as celebrations, and the memorial question was not an easy one to handle. The Anckland Provincial Centennial Council had now dealt with a large number of memorial applications. Many of them were similar in character, such as provision of parks, improvements to parks. reserves and playing areas, women's rest rooms and libraries, and the point that emerged from that was that the people of the province were consciously uniting in ideals to provide memorials expiessing a tribute to the past, ami demonstrating faith in the future. Many Proposals Approved. A review of the work transacted to date by the Auckland Provincial Centennial Council shows that many proposals have been approved. but in some instances further steps are necessary before finality is reached.
