TELEPHONE SERVICE.

Can anyone tell me through the columns of your paper what happens when one dials 390? Repeatedly I dial this number and wait any time from 30 seconds to five minutes. I ri _ n ff "Complaints," and am told that the toll division cannot cope with incoming calls and tell me to dial 390 and hold on. This trouble has been noticeable to me over the last twelve months, and, T am sure, also to a large number of other telephone subscribers. Surely the P. and T. is not under-staffed. FED UP. [Officials at the Auckland Tost Office state that every effort is mnde to give the quickest and most eflicient service. .There is possible delay at rush periods only, when records show that as many as 2~> people may simultaneously call 300. Officials of the Department regularly test the call themselves by ringing up, and under normal circumstances an immediate reply is received.—Ed.]
