SOCIAL SECURITY TAX.

I understand that girls tinder 16 years of age employed as domestics are being asked to pay the tax on wages. Can you please let me know if they are liable ? P. E. J. ATTWOOD. [Persons under 10 years of age are not liable to taxation under the Social Security Act. By the Act all persons, male and female and including natives, 16 years of age and over, who are ordinarily resident of Xew Zealand are required (1) "to register within one month after April 1, 1939, (2) upon registration to procure a coupon book, (3) to pay the social security charge at the rate of 1/ in the £1 upon salary and wages earned, (4) unless exempted, to pay the annual or quarterly instalments of the registration fee as they fall due, (5) and to furnish during May each year a declaration as to income other than salary or wages derived during the year ended on the previous March 31 and to pav the social security charge upon euch income,—

If "Get Busy" had read your leading article dealing with non-payment "of Social Security taxes he would see that he is taking up a very foolish attitude. The meeting held in Christchureh was evidently a political stunt Social Security was fully discussed before it became law, and the "electors have eince approved of it. "Get Busy" does not display much public spirit in advocating defianee of the law while remaining anon^nous. W. PICKERING.
