CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL.

THE PARK AND ACCESS ROADS. (To the Editor.) All advocates of Waitakere National Pa* as Auckland's centennial memorial will applaud the editorial in Saturday's "Star." Those whe * e M k T°- r fear—extensive reading have indeed failed in vision. Improvement of exiethw roads, plue, perhaps, a connection alon» t£[ top of the eea cliffs between Whatipu and Karekare, with one or two short connecting links, would fulfil roading requirements for many" years to come. One of the neatest merits of the scheme is. that, unlike most other memorial proposals, it will serve all classes and all types of citizens. There will be provision for the motorist, but not for him alone; for the naturalist, the botanist, the hiker, ami those too who claim to be none of these things, but merely lovers of beautiful bush and unspoiled scenery will equally benefit. Has it occurred, moreover, to those who advocate a centre of physical culture that the park scheme, developed on proper lines, would play a very large part in thie connection, too? '"Youth "hostels," as organised in Europe, would not be costly—either in equipment, or to patron*. Inter-connected with walking tracks—not roads—they would encourage one of the healthiest kinds of exerciese known, and in a form in which both sexes and all clashes of pocket could participate on equal terms. The more one examines the park Poheine, the greater seem its merits. May Auckland adopt it while there is yet time. J. W. KEALY
