MUSIC AND DRAMA. WINTER MONTHS OF 1940. ' I (By Telegraph.—Press Assoefetfoa.) WELLINGTON, Fridty. A national Centennial music eon. mittee has been appointed to advise the National Centennial Council and the Government on arrangements for a special programme of music and drama during the winter months of the Centennial year, 1940. The committee consists of the Director of the National Broadcasting Service, Professor J. Shelley, the Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs, Mr. J. W. Heenan, who will be chairman, Mr. D. A. Ewen (Wellington) | Dr. V. E. Gal way (Dunedin), Professor Hi-'lit (Christchuroh) and Professor H. TTollinrake (Auckland). Making the announcement to-night the Minister of jlnternal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, expressed the opinion that general approval would be given to the intention of the Government to take advantage of the Centennial to make a special feature of the musical and dramatic side of the celebrations. Mr. Parry said the programme would afford opportunities to choirs, both pakeha and Maori, orchestras, musical and dramatic societies, musical ensembles, composers and individual artists to excel in their work, and would make provision for the touring of some of the competing groups to different centres throughout New Zealand durin" their respective music weeks. The con" ditions of competitions would be made public shortly, and details of the facilities provided by the national committee would be conveyed to the provincial Centennial organisations by the members of the committee. The facilities would make available the services of overseas artists whose engagement was now being arranged for.
