IMPORT CONTROL

BRITISH AGENTS. APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT, LTFTING OF RESTRICTIONS. ! (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) , WELLINGTON", Friday, i After reviewing the import restrie- . tions in recent years at a general meetL ing of members of the United Kingdom . Manufacturers and New Zealand Representatives' Association in Wellington to-day, the president, Mr. David Hogg, , moved three resolutions as follows: "That this association urges the Government to remove restrictions on British imports; this association asks the Government to institute an inquiry into the underlying causes of the depletion of London funds• that the position of British exporters and their representatives'. in New Zealand be placed before interested associations in Britain with a request for urgent support of the first resolution." j Removal of Restrictions. j The resolutions were amended and carried in the following form:—"That this meeting of New Zealand representatives of manufacturers in the United Kingdom convened by the United Kingdom Manufacturers' and New Zealand Representatives' Association strongly urges the New Zealand Government to remove the present drastic restrictions (in many cases up to 100 per cent) on imports from the United Kingdom, thus implementing the Ottawa Agreement by giving to the United Kingdom products full opportunity of reasonable competition on this market. '"It is submitted in justification of this resolution that the figures of trade between the United Kingdom and New Zealand prove that there is a surplus of New Zealand exports over New Zealand imports from the United Kingdom, and that there should be no necessity for drastic discrimination of and embargoes on imports from the United Kingdom, which is the greatest market for New Zealand primary produce, and at the present time .is carrying the tremendous burden or re-armament for the Empire. Depletion of Funds. "That the charge of over-importation from the United Kingdom cannot be substantiated and that the New Zealand Government be requested to institute a public inquiry into the underlying causes of the depletion in London funds. "That the position in which the United Kingdom exporters and their New Zealand representatives and importers are now placed through restrictions and embargoes on I'nited Kingdom goods be placed forthwith before interested associations in the United Kingdom with a strong request for urgent support to our first resolution. "In support of this resolution it is submitted that over the first six months of the import regulations the United Kingdom exporters and their New Zealand representatives and importers have co-operated to the fullest possible extent in helping the import control regulations, but any further co-operation would only make us parties to a policy we believe must jeopardise inter-Empire relations."
