STEWARD'S EXPLOIT.
SIX WEEKS' IMPRISONMENT. \ (From Our Correspondent.) W ELLINGTON, Friday. "Accused was a steward 011 the oversons steamer Port Carolie, and when the ship was in port 011 April 5 he "was absent without leave. A warrant was issued for his arrest and nothing was hoard from him until last night." This statement was made l>v Inspector J. J. O'lS'eill in the Magistrate's Court to-dav, when liobert Shirley, a steward, aged 20, appeared before Mr. J. H. I-uxford, ! S.M., 011 three charges. Accused was convicted and discharged for being absent from the Port Caroline without leave, lie was sentenced to 10 days' imprisonment with hard labour for lx'in? intoxicated in charge of a motorcar and 011 a charge of unlawfully converting a motor-card valued at £255, the property of the New Zealand Government, lie was sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment with hard labour, the sentences to be eoncurrnt.
