SILVERDALE BRANCH.
A pleasant afternoon .was spent at the monthly meeting of the Silverdale Institute, with Mrs. Sawer in the chair. After business had been discussed, a beautiful handbag was presented to Mrs. Mancer, also a spray of everlasting flowers, and a pretty basket of fruit and autumn leaves. Mrs. JolTy presented to the institute a lovely table-cloth, and Mrs. Bridson presented a two-tiered cake-basket, beautifully made by her son. Mrs. Sawer exhibited and demonstrated a cushion of Italian quilting, and also gave an interesting description of her visit to Kennedy Bay Institute. A preserved fruit competition was won as follows: Tomatoes, Mrs. Jolly 1, Mrs. Aro 2; peaches, Mrs. Grut 1, Mrs. Bielby 2; pears, Mrs. Joliv 1; Mrs. Aro, 2. PETER PAN.
Varying from the haunting lilt of "When the April Showers Reach Hawaii," to the gay measure of wellknown popular melodies, Johnny Madden and his "Swing Kings" entertained the large crowd of dancers at the Peter Pan Cabaret on Saturday evening. Festive gatherings contributed to the bright atmosphere, and birthday celebrations were duly honoured in music.
The "Lambeth Walk," slow and quick foxtrots and jazz waltzes fulfilled the requirements of the modern dance programme, and an old-time waltz w r as added by special request. Songs by the versatile conductor, supplemented by orchestral effects, were appreciable features of the evening. Among those present were: Mesdames A. Newton, W. Dunn, S. and R. Swinton, J. Johnson, R. Steine, A. E. Neville, K. Allen, F- Mellveen, C. R. Clemson (Thames), N. C. Dentice, Allan Hille, Misses Jean McLean, Dorothy Thorburn, Molly Standish. Jean Jenkins, Clare and Marie Darby, Marie Ohlsen, G. McClunn, Beverley and Dorothy Pigott, Marie Nixon (Wellington), Eva Derrick, Joan Neild, Mary Belcher, Olga Carr, Gwen Bramley. Freda Jackson, Rita Wainwright, Winnie Greendale, Olive Svendsen (Pukekohe), Gloria King, Jean McMurrich. '
