PUBLIC WORKS EXPENDITURE FIGURES FOR NINE MONTHS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. Expenditure from the Public Works Fund proper for the nine months to December, 1938, is given in the Abstract of Statistics for March gt £6,112,503, compared with £3,05!>,C72 for the corresponding period of 1937. The total expenditure for the financial year 193738 was £6,118,030.
The following are the principal items of expenditure- during the last nine months of 1938, the corresponding figures for 1037 being given in parentheses:—Coi.Ktruction, etc., of railways, £2,564,997 (£1,260,563); public buildings, £964,867 ( £494,014); roads, etc., £855,031 ( £694,420); education buildings, £416,257 (£311,447); settlement of unemployed workers, £229,343 ( £141,218); native land settlement, £292,917 ( £183,332); telegraph extension, £267,088 ( £182,856).
The abstract gives the following average numbers of Public Works employees, that is, all workmen on undertakings directed by the Public Works Department, during February, 1939:— Roads, including main highways, 12,520; hydro-electric worksj 1179; other works, 8586 (public buildings 2026. railways 2650); total, 22,285.
