MENINGITIS CONTROL.

Astonishing Results With Sulphonilamide Drug. RECOVERY RATE 90 PER GENT. •' (Received 11 a.m.) KHARTOUM, April 4. Astonishing results in the treatment of cerebro-spinal meningitis are being obtained in Equatorial Province with the sulphonilamide drug Mayand-Baker 693. Mortalitv in previous epidemics was between 60 and 80 per cent, but the recovery rate now is 90 per cent. It is hoped that the disease in future will be controllable, with little loss of life. The remarkable success or the group of sulphonilamide drugs in the treatment of such desperate diseases as severe pneumonia, streptococcal meningitis and puerpural fever was the subject of an article in the "Lancet" in June of last year. One case was mentioned in which an old lady was cured after her left lung had collapsed. The group of drugs has been in use in New Zealand for some time in the treatment of infections due to streptococci.
