SMOKE SCREEN.

A VERY FIT HORSE.

TO EACE AT NEW PLYMOUTH

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

WANGANUI, Monday

After Easter W. Rayner will take in hand a couple of yearlings, both geldings. One is by Ringmaster from Curtain and the other by Posterity from Midinette. j Taken to Bulls on Saturday, Amatory ran his usual good race in the distance hack event, but just failed to get into the money. The Kiosk gelding would probably benefit if given a let up, as he has not shown that touch of brilliancy in his finishing efforts once possessed. There was a marked improvement in the form shown at Bulls compared with Wanganui by some horses, especially by Hanover, Trebor and Taitoru. At Wanganui Hanover was never going like a winner, but at Bulls he was always in the picture and won well. Ruling Star, winner of the Trial Plate at Bulls, is a four-year-old gelding by Chief Ruler from Phrosa. He was bred by Mr. G. F. Moore, who owns him. He raced well at Wanganui and gives promise of being useful. Although Red Cat failed at Wanganui and again at Bulls, when strongly supported, she is very fit and a race should come her way shortly. Taurangi stripped in good shape at Bulls and although beaten into second place in the sprint event by Taitoru, she went well enough to suggest that she will be hard to beat at Trentham, where she is to run in the Thompson Handicap on the first day. Trebor showed a return to something like his best form in winning the hack sprint at Bulls and the Spear Dance gelding will be worth watching from how on. He figures in the hack six at New Plymouth on Thursday. Vadanoe made his reappearance after a long spell at 'Bulls on Saturday, and, although he did not get into the money, he went well enough to point to him as one worth keeping in mind, for he will be all the better for the race. In winning the Rangitikei Cup Peerless registered the fastest time on record for the race the mile and a quarter. The Beau Pere filly did not win, by a big margin, but> she was going nicely at the finish. Mr. L. G. Paul did not take the risk of running Amigo in the Rangitikei Cup, -in view of the hard going, but the Beau

Pere gelding is in good order. He was a bit sore on the second day at Wanganui, but appears to be all right again and should pick up some money if taken to Trentham, as he is a good sort. He is in both the Thompson Handicap and the Railway Handicap.

Smoke Screen" is to accompany Russian Ballet to New Plymouth. The former's mission will be the Taranaki Stakes on Saturday and he will take a power of beating, as he is in great fettle. Russian Ballet has also been hitting out well and will make things interesting in the' Flying Handicap on Thursday.

, Submission has gone on the right wajr since her race at Wanganui, in which she was interfered with; otherwise she would have been troublesome to the winner. The Limond filly is to run in the Pacific Handicap on the first day at Trentham. Homily » to run in the Railway Handicap at Trentham as it is thought the straight sue ■furlongs will. suit her. The Posterity filly has heaps of speed and it should'be possible to get the best out of •her on-a straight course. ''■"■'4
