FALLING OFF.
FEWER EMPLOYED.
PUBLIC WORKS JOBS. MINISTER'S EXPLANATION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. A noticeable falling-off in the numbers of men employed on public works in various parts of the country prompted a question to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, whether the rate of expenditure has been curtailed.
The Minister replied that while fewer men were now employed finance was not the reason for the curtailment.
"I have been forcing men off to under- j take seasonal jobs, such as shearing and harvesting." explained the Minister, "and as a result hundreds of men have gone off public works. They have been promised jobs when the farming seasonal work ends. There has also been a drifting away of numbers to outside jobs, and we encourage that, because we don't want to carry out non-essential work. These are the only causes of any decline in the pace of construction."
