IN NEED OF REPAIRS.

HOUSES IN THE SUBURBS. NEW LEGISLATION WANTED. A' resolution, that, as the recent housing survey had disclosed the urgent need of structural repairs to houses classed as unsatisfactory, the Government bo requested to pass legislation that would give local bodies power to require owners to make the repairs needed to render houses reasonably habitable, and, further, that if the owner was unable or unwilling to have the repairs done, local bodies be empowered to carry out thij work and charge the cost fo the owner* the amount to be a first charge on the property,' was brought before the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association at its meeting last night. Mr. W. J. Moore, a member of the Onehunga Borough Council, sponsored the resolution, which had been passed ■ by his council. He instanced several cases of beds falling through floors and inspectors putting their feet through floors in houses in the Onoliiiiiga borough. The chairman, Mr. 1, J. Goldstinc, suggested that, since the matter was of such far-reaching effect, Mr. Moore should bring ■ the motion before the association at its next meeting, and that the resolution should be forwarded to each local body for consideration in the interim.
