THE NEW BUILDING.

Difliculties arising from the (lovernmeiit's intention to erect the new social security building close to the existing road frontage in Aotea Quay have been settled as a result of discussions between the Mayor. Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. and City Council officers, and the Minister of Kinan.e. the Hon. \V. Xash, and the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the lion. P. (J. Sullivan. Arrangements have l>een made to provide for ample access for cars by a roadway along the rear of the social security building and for parkin;; space alongside the building but off the roadway. It lias also been arranged that this roadway will continue north alon*; the rear of the railway land. In the event of this land t>ein<r utilised by the Kail ways Department or lessees, ample provision will be made to keep clear of tile main road. ">-"> ft wide through from the ramp to Waterloo Quay. Referring to the City Council's views and the discussions the Mayor said: — '•It is ijuite incorrect to invest that the Wellington City Council is anxious to find some means of stopping the llnveminent from proceeding with the social security scheme. '"Our discussions were characterised l»v a spirit of mutual helpfulness, and as a result I shall be able to report to the council on lines which 1 think will be generally satisfactory. I think it can be said the citizens' interests have now bteii protected.' .
