SAFE RIFLED.
DARING BURGLARY.
£400 IN CASH AND JEWELS. PROBLEM FOR POLICE. AH within the space of one hour last night, thieves ueed a ladder to giin entrance to the house of Mr. P. McGirr, 55, King Edward Street, near the Dominion Road Post Office, rifled a lo.cked safe without leaving a mark upon it, and decamped with £400 in money and jewellery. When Mr. McGirr and his family' left home at 8.5 p.m. to go for a motor drive, the house was securely locked. Exactly an hour later on his return he found the back door ajar, the safe door open and the money and jewellery missing. How the eafe was opened after it had been locked and the key removed is a mystery which detectives are at present endeavouring to solve. Entrance was gained through one of the windows on the back verandah, not easily accessible from the ground. This window had been left slightly open. A ladder was used by the thieves to reaoh the window ledge. They left by the back door, which was opened from the inside. The burglary was a daring one, for the house is in a closely-settled district.
