NEED OF WIDER INTEREST. RESEARCH WORKERS VIEWS. Dr. G. B. Cone, a graduate of Ota go University, returned to New Zealand this week after spending four yeare in England, in the last two years, with a Ministry of Agriculture grant, ehe carried out research work on a fungal disease of lettuce which has greatly troubled vegetable farmers in the south of England. She k now going to Dunedin to act as deputy tor Dr. J. E. Holloway, F.R.S.. who has gone abroad to visit laboratories in the United States and England. Dr. Cone referred to the decision to establish a chair of botany at Auckland University College, the firet such chair in Xew Zealand, and said that if it were necessary to make an appointment from abroad there was every pros]K"ct of the applicants including men of very high qualification*. Many young English botanists with high qualifications were very interested in Xew Zealand nowadays. Recently a new appointment had been made to the chair of botany at the University of Sydney. If the teaching of botany in Xc« Zealand were to receive a similar stillinium, it would be a very good thins for Xew Zealand, which, being ba»=ieally an agricultural country, needed a continual supply of well-trained candidates for thp Government agricultural services. There was also need to develop a body of people among the general public appreciative of the botanical problems connected with agriculture, on the one hand, and with our very interesting flora on the other.
