SUBSIDISED WORK.

FAIR RETURN FOR WAGES. COUNCIL MEMBER'S COMMENT. (Prom Our Correspnndetit.) TE AROHA, Tuesday. Strong comment on the recent circular from the Labour Department relative to the procedure to be adopted when men employed on Scheme 13, full time subsidised works, have failed to fendef a reasonable return of wofk for the wages they receive, was made by Mr. W. C. Kennedy, who is also chairman of the Piako County Council, at a mefctinjr of the Te Aroha Borough Council. Mr. Kennedy said there was no reason why a man oti subsidised labour should be treated any better than a man in an ordinary job. If a man on relief work did anything Worthy of dismissal his conduct had to be reported to headquarters, but there were half a dozen ways whereby he could avoid dismissal. The Minister might consider him not physirniiy fit.

"There are hundreds of decent able* bodied men to-day," said Mr. nedy, "who are willing and keen to work and they do so by showing a pride in their jobs, lut there are a few of them who arc out for all they can .set for as little effort as possible. yet every day we reail of the Minister getting down on his knees to these men and begging them to give him a fair spin. I think tliey should be treated the same as anyone else who does not l_' e satisfaction." Aγ, there was no further comment from the councillors the letter was received.
