For December of lest year import* at the port of Auckland showed an increase of 24,809 torn, or 21.80 per cent, compared with November; transhipments an increase of 829 tons; and exports an increase of 9931 tons or 24.20 per cent. For the December period the total tonnage handled wae 192,018, an increase of 1445 tons, 1 compared with December, 1937. Overseas inward tonnage allowed an increase of 14,817 ton*. Inward passengers for December totalled 2226, a* againet 3643 for the corresponding month of 1937, and there was also a drop in outward pasmengeffta, th« figure* being 1407 and 1680, a decrease of 273. ' ,y "■' f . For the month 658 ship* arrived, with a gross tonnage of 460,771, and 523 vessels cleared the port, with a, gross tonnage of 455,295. Compared with! December, 1937, the returns for overseas merchant shipping showed a decrease of 11 vessels, representing a gross tonnage of 76,485.
