DROWNED IN STREAM.
HOKIANGA TRAGEDY. BOY SWEPT FROM HORSE. Swept from liis horse as lie was attempting to ford the flooded Wainiamaku Stream, near Hokianga, North Auckland, last night, a 10-year-old Maori boy, Rahiri Ngakaru, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ngakaru, of Waimamaku, was drowned. He was trying to cross the stream about three miles from the mouth. The task proved too much for his horse and both were swept into deep water below the ford. The only witness of the tragedy was a young girl, who gave the alarm, but ,when her father arrived the lad had disappeared. A number of residents, in spite of the dangerously flooded state of the stream and the fact that a cold wind was blowing, immediately began a search. Swimmers searched deep pools in the neighbourhood and tlie stream was dragged with a fishing net, but without result.
