NEW SCHEME.

UNIVERSITY DEGREES. THE B.A. AND B.Sc. COURSES. FIRST-YEAR SUBJECTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A recommendation that the examinations in first-year subjects for the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science should be conducted by the university colleges and not by the University of Xew Zealand was adopted by the Senate of the University to-day. The recommendation, which Mas made by the Academic Board, was as follows: —That the examinations at. Stage I. for the subjects of B.A. and B.Sc. courses be handed over to the respective Professorial Boards, which s-hall report to the University awards of "pass" or "fail" on the recommendations of a board of examiners consisting of the heads of departments and other teachers in the faculty. In submitting the recommendation the Pro-Chancellor, Dr. J. Hight, said results would be announced earlier and' congestion in the Xovember time-table avoided. Dr. H. G. Denham said it should clearly be understood that there was no intention of carrying this method of examining.beyond Stage I. It had been felt, too, that the present system of setting pa]>erß common to the four colleges led to hardship. The suggested system would allow a fairness not allowed by the present system. Details of the scheme had yet to be worked out. The vice-Chancellor, Professor T. A. Hunter, said the suggested practice had been before and it was not such a radical change as might be thought.

Other recommendations by the Academic Board that were approved were: That all students, external or internal, should be required to take the degree examination; that the Otago members of the board be a committee to draw up a detailed scheme and report to the next meeting of the board; and that the question of the extension of the scheme to the examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Laws be referred to the Otago members of the board.

Ib -was also decided that Economics 11. and 111. should be examined in Xew Zealand, but not Economics for the master's degree.
