The Duke of Kent, speaking at the dinner of the New Zealand Society of which he accepted membership, announced that he and the Duchess would visit New Zealand in 1940, at which the chairman, Mr. W. J. Jordan, led enthusiastic applause. The Duke added: "We shall try by personal efforts to unite more closely the Commonwealth of Nations. We shall practise what we are now preaching. When we visit New Zealand we want to see the country and to see the Maoris if possible. We shall think not only of the l>eauty of the scene, but of all for which it etands. "In your and our eyes New Zealand is a magic word and conjures up fascinating pictures of a country with wonderful scenery, apart from its wonderful grazing and dairy resources." Sir Thomas Inekip. Dominions Secretary, paid a tribute to New Zealand's enterprise. Four hundred distinguished guests included Viscount Bledisloe. A Oft model of a Maori war canoe adorned the central table. The occasion was .the 09th anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi.
