INQUIRY REFUSED.

WOMEN EMPLOYEES. IN GOVERNMENT SERVICE. SOUTH AFRICAN ATTITUDE, (From Our Own Correspondent) JOHANNESBURG, January 5. The Government has declined to ippoint a special committee to inquire into the whole question of the employment of women in the Public Service. The request was made by the Public Servants' Association of South Africa, to which the decision of the Government has now been communicated by the Minister of the Interior. The Minister, in his reply to the association, again points out that the Public Service Commission is the statutory body appointed to advise the Government on all staff matters. "The commission is well acquainted with the historical background of the questions at issue, and it has regular and progressive contact with current developments in actual working practice," he states. "The appointment of a special committee, as suggested by the association, is obviously a course which requires the strongest justification, and, as this has not been demonstrated, the proposal cannot be agreed to. "After full examination and consideration of the position the Government finds itself in agreement with the Public Service Commissioner's policy and procedure. and it is not prepared to entertain any radical modification of the general principles governing the system at ipresent in operation." the Minister'# letvter to the association concludes.
