Purchase of Motor Torpedo
Boats from Britain.
NATIONAL REGISTER PLANNED (Received 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The "Sydney 'Morning Herald" llohart correspondent says the Federal Cabinet, at a series of meetings beginning at Hobart to-day, will probably approve of a proposal to establish a national defence register, either on a voluntary or compulsory basis.
The Minister of Defence, Mr. G. A. Street, announced that the Federal Government has ordered six motor torpedo boats, and will order six more as soon as testa of the new type have been carried out in Britain, says a message from Hobart.
The hulls are to bo built at the Cockatoo dockyard, and the engines will be imported from Britain. The first will be launched before the end of the year.
A cable from Darwin says a militia unit, probably consisting of 200 infantry, in to be rained in Darwin to cooperate with the permanent mechanised force which will be stationed there shortly.
