LARGEST BARGE.
WELDED STEEL HULL FOR TRADE ON WAIKATO. (From Our Own Correspondent) MERCER, Saturday. The largest vessel of its kind in the Dominion, a 100-foot welded steel barge, built. entirely at. Mercer, made its-' maiden voyage to the Waikato Heads this week. -Tlie barge, which is 33ft in beam, and has a depth of Cft Oin, has a capacity of more than 200 tons. When fully laden, she draws only two feet of water.
The barge was built for the Roose' Shipping Company at Mercer, taking six months, to complete. Welded into one . piece, slie- was made specially for Waikato conditions. . She is divided internally, into four watertight .compart-, rnents by means of steel .bulkheads and is completely decked in steel. : The company now has several steel and iron barges, but. the majority, which are lised; chiefly for the carriage of shingle," are" of.- wopd. Tlie new boat is - built on any improved , style. She will be used 'in the transport. of. general cargo .to and from -AVaikato ports to tlie head of 'the river, where'the goods are transhipped. The company's fleet, now. comprises a dozen barges, two paddle steamers and two tugs. j
