OFFICIAL RETURNS. , UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES. TWO FOUR-WEEKLY PERIODS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The unemployment returns for the four-weekly periods ended December 17, 1938, and January* 14, 1030, have been issued by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb. The returns, which include those on the register who are for health or other reasons unlit for employment, are:— Registered, but not on relief.— "December 17, 103S, 407; January 14, • .1030, r>s3. On sustenance, awaiting placement. —On scheme i> relief. December 17. 1038, • 510; January 14. 1030, 483. Total, t December 17, 1038, 017; January 14, - 1030. 1030. On sustenance, unfit for employment for health or other reasons, but being afforded relief from the Employment . Promotion Fund.—December 17,* 1038, ) 7285; January 14, 1030, 7800. The January figures disclose a reduction iof ; 7211. as against the corresponding/figure for January 15, 1038. • For the four-weekly periods under ' review;^-. expenditure from the fund under the .heading of promotion of em-. r ployment,? as distinct from relief ? expenditure, was estimated at £510,880 L for December and £420,081 for January.
