JELLICOE AND BEATTY JOIN
NELSON.
BUSTS FOB THE SQUARE.
LOXDOX. Januarv 1
XcUon. in rrafalgar Square, is shortly to be joined by Jellicoe and Beatty. Busts of these famous admirals of the Great arc to facc the Xclson column. Both will l.c bareheaded— though Beattv's peaked cap, worn at a jaunty tilt, was the most famous piece of headgear of the war.
Mr. William MacMillan. R.A., and Mr. Charles Wheeler, A.R.A.. who are jointly responsible for more than a score of statues in London, are working on the bu9ts. They tossed a coin to decide which of them should make which bust. Mr. Wheeler got Jellicoe. Mr. MacMillan took Beatty. This week Mr. MacMillan, who had nothing to say about the cap, said: "I want to show Beattv in his prime—during the war, or just "after it. I .want to show him as people remember him."
Mr. Wheeler said: "A statue isn't a dummy, to present a perfect sartorial effect. I want to show Jellicoe as a classicist, an orthodox sailor. A peaked cap would hide his forehead.
The busts will be placed in semicircular recesses at the front of the central fountain basin in Trafalgar Square.
