PLATYPUS FUR RUGS.
ONLY A DOZEN IN WORLD. S\DXEY, January 20. It i* said that there are only about a dozen platypus fur rugs in the world, and that they are very valuable. One has come into the pos*e*sion of Dr. Eleanor M. Stang, Senior Government Medical Officer of School*, measuring •»7in by 7.> in; it consist* of 53 pelt* of brown, silver and fawn, and wa* given to Dr. Stang's father, al*o a doctor, bv a patient in the Corryong district in the Upper Darling area of Xew South Wales.
A London woman ha* a platypus rug which was valued at a large sum. Dr. Stang believe* that her rug i& worth only what she can get for it, but has taken the precaution of lodging it in a bank for safe keeping.
About 30 year* ago a law wa* passed in New South Wales making it an offence to take or kill a platvpu*, with a maximum penalty of £j a 'skin. The platvpu*, which i* said to be dying out. has the characteristic* of animal and bird. It lives in the water like a fish, ha* the bill and feet of a duck, lay* eggs and suckles its young.
