UNEXPECTED EXPENSE.
WIDENING A BRIDGE. (From Our Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Wednesday. Much difficulty lias 'lx?en experienced by the contractor engaged to iucrease the width of No. 1 Bridge, Whitiora, to enajble it to accommodate two-way traffic. The bridge is a concrete structure 180 ft in length on the main South Road at the northern ~ boundary of Hamilton. In a report to the Hamilton Borough Council this evening, the borough engineer, Worley, eaid the specifications were based on the original foundations of the old part of the structure, but not only had it been necessary to drive piles twice the depth of th© old piles, but it 'had been only possible to obtain half the set necessary to safely carry the load required. It had 'been necessary to drive twice as many piles, including numerous concrete ones, immediately adjacent to the existing structure. The 252 ft of wooden piles thought to be required had been increased to 967 ft. and in addition extra concrete piles had been driven. The cost of the work had thus been increased by £704. The Mayor, Mr. H. b. Caro, said that the cost of the additional work would be equally shared by the couneil and the Main Highways Board.
