SEVEN MATCHES TO FIVE. \ ictory by seven matches to five went to the Canterbury lawn tennis team in its challenge to Auckland for the Wilding Shield, the tournament concluding yesterday. Canterbury had established a big lead on the first day by winning throe singles and two doubles, with the loss of only one singles. Yesterday the Aiieklanders made a great recovery by winning three of the singles, winch brought the score to o—4 in favour of the challengers. At this stage A. D. Brown, of Canterbury, who was leading 6—4 and 4—2 Against J. T. Mayson. of Auckland, slipped on the baseline of Xo. 2 court and dislocated his shoulder. The match was adjourned for more than an hour, after which Brown returned ami completed the match witli a win in straight sets. His first defeat in Wilding Shield tennis was suffered by the Canterbury captain, C. Angas, who went down .T. W. Gunn, the Aucklander, in three sets. When the matches stood at 6—4 in favour of Canterbury, the doubles were the decisive matches, and Angas and Pattinson's win against Gunn and Bed-i fold placed the issue beyond doubt and, ! as Brown was playing under difficulties ! on the adjoining court, the Canterbury i pair defaulted. The decisive doubles match between Angas and Pattinson and Gunn and Bed- I ford provided spectacular tennis, Angas being the best of the four in all-round ! play, though he received great support I trom his partner.
