Calloway, one of the New Zealand memliers of the crew, who signed on at Auckland. "After leaving Duncdiu on August IS, he writes, "we sighted the I'a Ik la ml islands .'to days later. For days rain, snow and hail storms were experienced. The decks and rigging were ice-eovered, and it was so cold that tlie snow anil salt water formed soft ice about the decks. Head winds were encountered between the Horn and the south-east trades. "One day when we were steering by the wind a big sea broke aboard. Away went the forestay. to which the outer jib was fastened. Twenty minutes later the mainstay broke, letting the stay slip down the mast. At the same time the main topgallant lilew out. A few days before the Hying jib thri shed itself to pieces, when the sheet jammed. "We passed the four-masted lmri|ues \ iking and Pamir on November 11, and we crowed the Line next day. On Decemlier 4, lit) days out from Otago Heads, we passed near the Azores. This was the In-ginning of bad weather. In the North Atlantic it blew gale after gale. One hundred and twenty days from Dunedih we were abreast of the I'ishop's Kock lighthouse on December I"). Here we received orders to discharge our cargo in London, so on we went. (In Christmas Day we struck bad weather in the Kuglish Channel and berthed at Victoria Dock. We had head winds all the time."
