BIG GAME FISHING.
WEATHER AFFECTS SPORT. CATCHES AT MAYOR ISLAND. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TAURA NG A. Tli ursda v. The present westerly weather has seriously interfered with the big game fishing at Mayor Island. Fairly heavy seas have l>een running most of the time and when fishing has been attempted conditions have been uncomfortable. However, a number of fish have been landed, and all have been responsible for good displays. The first fish of the season went to Mr. J. Dickson, who landed a mako of 1501b on December 20. Mr. Spenc-e 011 January 1 landed a mako weighing 1301b. while on the same day Mr. R. M. Hastie! of Palmerstnn North, landed a 401b kingfish. The first swordfisli of the season (2901b) was secured by Mr. N. F. Searle. of WaiKranui. January 7 saw better fishing. Mr. H. M. Laing. of Masterton. landed a 3101b swordfisli. Mr. .1. Shearer, also of Masterton. a 2951b swordfisli. and a Gisborne partv. comprising Messrs. B. Kemp. M. Maude. W. Irwin. L. Parker. D. Crisp and N. Bull, four makos weighing 1501b. 3501b. 350ib and 3201b. No further fish were landed until yesterday, when Mr. T. G. De Ren/y of Hinuera caught a striped marlin of 2901b. Particular interest is centred round the approaching visit of the Lerner Scientific Expedition. The partv of six scientists will arrive in Tanranga next week and will leave for Mayor Island 011 Wednesday. It is the intention of the expedition to study the fish life at the island. Dr. and Mrs. R. L. Sutton, of Kansas City, will arrive, this week and will fish the island waters for about a week.
