HANDWORK DISPLAY.

ORIGINAL DESIGN.

HILL TOP SCHOOL. Remarkable originality in both colour and design was seen at ann«al exhibition of handwork of the Hill Top School, held in St. Sepulchre's Hall to-day. As well as the usual display of needlework, and arts and crafts of all forms, there were some lovely examples of tapestry worked from original water colour designs, while originality and colour was to be seen in the middle ciass imaginative water colours.

The work of the senior girls included some lovely beach outfits, complete with shorts, suntops, hats and small skirts. An interesting feature of the work of the senior girls was handmade embroidery worked on net, while the knitting section of this particular display was also good.

The work of the middle class gills showed some attractive linen bags, also worked from original designs, done first in water colours. Leather work was also shown in the display of the miildla class girls.

The preparatory sections included a collection of tea trays made with matching toast l acks, tea cloths and tea cosies, while the work of the infant school showed some very attractive waler colour designs and simple beach cloaks.

An outstanding feature of the exhibition was the display of illuminated posters depicting various forms of modern advertising. Also interesting was the infant school model of a Maori pa, while the clay modelling of an old English village included in the art section was also effectively carried out. As well as the clay modelling of the English village, the art section included lino cuts of the various buildings of the village. Clay sculpturing and carving in Oamaru stone were also outstanding exhibits in the art section.
