MEN EXPRESS CONCERN

Nearly three weeks have passed eince the flooding of the Hikurangi mine, and production has not yet been resumed. The management state that the pumps are in good working order and that progress is being made with the dewatering. It is stated that the newlyinstalled pump is operating well.

No definite assurance, however, has been given concerning the date on which production may be resumed. Despite optimistic views on the part of the management, a number of miners have expressed anxiety, fearing that it will be some considerable time before they again in work.

Of the 60 men employed at the mine about 30 have been retained to assist in the de-watering process and other work. The remaining 30 have sought other work, a number being absorbed in the Public Works Department.
