A 14-year-old boy, Herbert George Bailey, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. £~ Bailey, We»L Eyreton, was killed, and Mr. .Robert Uutchiuson, aged t>B, was critically injured when a large wattle tree fell on them on the farm of Mrs. D. Clapmau, West Kyretoii, this afternoon. Mr. Hutchinson and the boy, who wore employed on the farm, were together near the tree when, without warning, it fell ou them, causing severe internal injuries to both. There was no wind at the time and it is believed that the tree, which had grown with a lean, had fallen because of it» own weight. To-day'e heavy rain had softened the ground about the roots, which were torn away when the tree fell. The injured persons were taken lo the Chrietchurch Hospital, where Bailey died at 8.40 p.m. Late to-night Mr. Hutchiusons condition was unchanged.
